The Blue Planet

Do you love the blue hues? Blue is considered a soothing and pleasant color with an universal appeal. Shades of blue breezed and floated down the runways giving us visions of days filled with beautiful clear blue skies, dark starry or moonlight nights, dreamy cloudy days, energetic beach waves, enchanted ocean views, beach scenes, icy glaciers or island getaways.

The sky, ocean and water in its various forms were used as inspiration by many designers for their Spring 2013 collection, from prints to sunglasses. The unique interpretations of these elements by designers showed nothing but pure creativity and child-like imagination. From proenza schouler’s aerial like view of beach scenes to Jonathan Saunder’s drip drop water prints, the blue elements were examined from every point of view.

Details such as fluidity, transparency and reflective qualities of water or airy, illuminating and fluffy qualities of sky were artistically expressed. Blues also showed up in the form of reflective metallics, clear transparent plastics and inky versions too. Pantone recently announced blues as its top colors for spring  2013. Transparent and tinted pieces were all over the Spring 2013 runways. Details such as clear overlays on solid pieces, beautifully tinted sunglasses and icy tinted spike jewelry were unique and interesting.

Clouds and sky made up for beautiful print inspiration for 2013. Designers used clear skies, lightening strikes, cloudy days, sunrise, sunsets, moonlit or starry nights as inspiration to create unique print effects.

Prints details ranged from tribal, floral, leafy, geometric, abstract, picturesque landscape, ocean scenes, crashing beach waves, print blocking, color blocking, nautical stripes, tear or rain drops and sky or cloud prints to travel inspired such as postage stamps and currency notes. Many prints were covered with sheer or lace overlays and gradation effects.

Ocean waves, tear or rain drops, repetitive elements and breezy skirts induced dynamic and fluid movements.

Whiles blues are also linked to depression, sadness and boredom, the right tones can be energizing or soothing and relaxing. Must see blue collections? Monique Lhuillier, Proenza schouler, Alberta Ferretti, Oscar De La Renta, Versace, Tory Burch, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Burberry Prorsum, Jason Wu, Charlotte Ronson, Erdem, Blugirl, Giles, Charlotte Ronson, Mary Katrantzou, Michael Van Der Ham, Jonathan Saunders and Matthew Williamson.
