Have you heard of Beyonce’s song pretty hurts? Well, pretty can not only can hurt our health and well-being but also the health of our planet. Plastics and synthetic junk used in our skincare and beauty products are ending up in our oceans and great lakes, which is not only a threat to our environment but also a threat to our health (it ends up in our food).
The New York Times recently reported on tiny synthetic microbeads used in cosmetics and toothpastes such as exfoliating beads in skincare products, that are ending up in the guts of fishes (read here, here and here). Bio based skincare and cosmetics have come a long way and we now have an option to adopt luxurious high-performance based skincare products that are not only safe for our planet and us but also effective performance wise. Here are a few natural exfoliating products to try that are bio based and biodegradable. I have tried them all, except The Bodi Deli and Cardamom + Coffee scrub.
Clarisonic Mia 2, Cardamom + Coffee body scrub, Suki Exfoliate Cleanser, John Masters Jojoba and Gingseng Exfoliating Face Cleanser, Shea Terra Rose Hips Black Soap Deep Pore Facial Wash, The Body Deli Blueberry Fusion Microscrub, Farmaesthetics Sweet Milk and Orange Peel Facial Exfoliate
A free iPhone app called “Beat the Micro Bead” can help you detect products and brands with plastic microbeads and avoid buying them. As consumers, we can opt for more sustainable alternatives and do our part in helping to keep us and our planet safe. What are your favorite eco-freindly exfoliating products?
You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
