Pretty hurts – Toxic microbeads in skincare

Have you heard of Beyonce’s song pretty hurts? Well, pretty can not only can hurt our health and well-being but also the health of our planet. Plastics and synthetic junk used in our skincare and beauty products are ending up in our oceans and great lakes, which is not only a threat to our environment but also a threat to our health (it ends up in our food).

The New York Times recently reported on tiny synthetic microbeads used in cosmetics and toothpastes such as exfoliating beads in skincare products, that are ending up in the guts of fishes (read herehere and here). Bio based skincare and cosmetics have come a long way and we now have an option to adopt luxurious high-performance based skincare products that are not only safe for our planet and us but also effective performance wise. Here are a few natural exfoliating products to try that are bio based and biodegradable. I have tried them all, except The Bodi Deli and Cardamom + Coffee scrub.

Bio Based exfoliating Products

Bio Based Exfoliating Products

Clarisonic Mia 2Cardamom + Coffee body scrub, Suki Exfoliate Cleanser, John Masters Jojoba and Gingseng Exfoliating Face  Cleanser, Shea Terra Rose Hips Black Soap Deep Pore Facial Wash, The Body Deli Blueberry Fusion Microscrub, Farmaesthetics Sweet Milk and Orange Peel Facial Exfoliate

A free iPhone app called “Beat the Micro Bead”  can help you detect products and brands with plastic microbeads and avoid buying them. As consumers, we can opt for more sustainable alternatives and do our part in helping to keep us and our planet safe. What are your favorite eco-freindly exfoliating products?

It’s pretty disturbing to think that these microbeads are ending up in fish. I’ve made a pretty conscious effort to transition to friendly and natural beauty products as It’s important for both my health and that of our planet’s. For exfoliating I use a Clarisonic and One Love Organics Microderma Scrub & Mask.

    Have a wonderful week Sheetal!

It is disturbing, isn’t it? I love one love organics exfoliating scrub / mask and I use it too. I love how versatile the product is. I have used it with cleanser for exfoliating and mixed it with toners to turn the powder into a mask. I love how all their products are simple, versatile and multitasking. Clarisonic is an amazing tool 🙂

It seems like a bad time for the environment, and lately even more so.
I’ve been steadily switching to more natural products, but it seems even those can be tricky too. I am enjoying my grapeseed oil the most though 🙂 This was a really interesting article!

Agree. It is getting worse and It is tricky with natural products too. Seems like a basic chemistry degree is a must these days to protect ourselves from ingesting too many toxic products and keep us away from polluting the envirorment. Grapeseed oil is definitely amazing. 🙂
