Ore to nature

Did you like Mary Katrantzou’s Spring 2012 collection? I absolutely loved the collection and I couldn’t wait to write about it. Mary Katrantzou’s theme of “nature vs nurture” was one-of-a-kind collection featuring elements from our beautiful mother-nature and modern technology, a beautiful fusion of handmade and manmade. Based on the concept of “opposites attract”, the complex digital prints from this beautiful collection featured breathtaking natural elements from our land, sea and sky such as coral reef and blooming flowers to elements from our modern technology such as tin cans and car parts. Many of these prints had a sort of “distorted beyond recognition” feel and this combined with a 3D like effect and repetitive elements added additional dose of curiosity and complexity to this amazing collection. If you are wondering how someone can bring all these conflicting elements together and manage to make it all work then you have to see this collection.

Fabrics used ranged from plasticized ones to printed tulle and chiffon with a lustre finish. Colors were land, sea, sky and technology inspired with mint, lavender, sunny yellow, floral pink, grass green, teal, coral, turquoise, steel gray etc. as few prominent colors that made up the color pallette. Lots of angular cut-outs at neckline, shoulders and arms were seen along with sharp asymmetrical hemlines that added a modern sexy vibe to some of the pieces in the collection. Some dresses had flowing trains and bubble skirts for a feminine fairy-tale like appeal. The unique digital prints depicted a beautiful marriage between the amazing manmade elements and elements from our mesmerizing nature, and included prints such as stars, coral reef and beautiful flowers to film reel, car parts and microphones. Print mix and color blocking trend was also highly utilized. Messy hair and bright colored lips in unusual colors such as blue and green complemented the collection (I will be sticking to pinks and corals though). Overall, the collection brought together the best of technology and mother nature, highlighting the concept of unity, harmony and balance between these diverse elements that were brought together so flawlessly. What do you think of this collection?  Would love to hear your views!
